What is the Compass Pro App for Android?

The Compass Pro App for Android is a free, open-source navigation tool built with Flutter that turns your Android phone into a precision compass — and a great deal more. Unlike basic compass apps that only show North, this app bundles 8 distinct navigation modes into one package: a Vastu Shastra direction guide, a Qibla finder accurate to ±3°, True North correction using the WMM-2020 magnetic model, NOAA-calculated sun times and golden hour, a real-time GPS speed tracker, and a full waypoint navigation system.

It runs on any Android phone with Android 5.0 or higher, works fully offline for all core features, and works fully offline for all core features.

💡

Why choose this over other compass apps?

Most competitors show just a basic heading. Compass Pro App gives you Qibla + Vastu + True North + Sun times + Speed + Waypoints in a single polished app across all 6 colour themes.

🧭

Mode 1 — Live Magnetic Compass

Core heading · Always available · Works offline

Your phone’s magnetometer sensor is read several times per second. The heading is smoothed using linear angle interpolation so the dial rotates gracefully rather than snapping. The rose counter-rotates while the needle stays fixed — just like a real compass.

  • Heading in degrees (000° – 359°) with 16-point cardinal labels
  • Accurate display: 360° shows as 000° — no erroneous readings
  • 5 dial styles: Classic, Military, Nautical, Minimal, Vintage
  • Works fully offline — no internet or GPS required for this mode
  • GPS coordinate panel: latitude, longitude, altitude, accuracy (with refresh)
🌐

Mode 2 — True North Correction

WMM-2020 magnetic declination · Requires GPS

Magnetic north can differ from geographic True North by up to 20° depending on your location. This mode applies the WMM-2020 (World Magnetic Model 2020) correction — the same model used by aviation, military, and professional surveying globally.

  • WMM-2020 declination: accurate to ±2° worldwide
  • Declination badge shown in heading area (e.g. +3.2°)
  • Dial visually shifts by the declination amount
  • Declination recalculated live as you move (corrects drift bug)
🕌

Mode 3 — Qibla Direction Finder

Great-circle bearing to Mecca · Works from anywhere on Earth

Calculates the bearing from your GPS location to the Kaaba in Mecca (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E) using the haversine formula on a spherical Earth model — the same calculation used in precision navigation systems. A green crescent arrow appears on the rotating dial and always points toward Mecca.

  • Accuracy: within 0.01° from any point on Earth
  • Distance to Mecca shown in km (e.g. 4,453 km from Delhi)
  • Deviation bar: degrees left or right needed to align
  • Alignment confirmed with green panel and text when within ±3°
  • Live update: Qibla recalculated as you move to a new location
🔒

Mode 4 — Bearing Lock

Navigate a fixed heading · Track deviation in real time

Lock your current heading with one tap and navigate a straight line — useful for dead reckoning through forests, returning exactly the way you came, or following a map bearing precisely.

  • One-tap lock: saves current heading as the reference bearing
  • Dashed target arrow + circular marker drawn on the rotating dial
  • Deviation arc shows how many degrees you’ve drifted
  • Sliding deviation bar: centre = on bearing, left/right = off course
  • Live instruction: “On bearing” / “Turn right” / “Sharp left” / “Turn around”
  • Re-lock and Unlock buttons; medium haptic feedback on lock
🌅

Mode 5 — Sun Times & Golden Hour

NOAA solar algorithm · Location-accurate · Auto-refreshes

The full NOAA solar position algorithm — Julian day, equation of time, solar declination, hour angle — gives you sunrise and sunset times accurate to within a minute for your exact GPS position.

  • Animated arc bar showing the sun’s current position through its daily path
  • Sunrise and sunset in local time; day length (e.g. 12h 34m)
  • Morning golden hour: 60 min after sunrise. Evening: 60 min before sunset
  • “Golden hour” badge appears while you’re in the window
  • Polar region protection: NaN/infinity guard prevents crashes at extreme latitudes
  • Sun times auto-recalculate as you move

Mode 6 — GPS Speed Tracker

Doppler speed · Session stats · Activity detection

Reads GPS Doppler speed directly from the geolocator stream — the same technique used by dedicated sports GPS devices. Handles the Android quirk where GPS returns −1.0 for unknown speed (clamped to 0).

  • Large 48px speed readout in km/h (or mph)
  • Colour gauge: teal (slow) → amber (driving) → red (fast)
  • Session max speed and total distance since app opened
  • Smart activity: Stationary / Walking / Jogging / Cycling / Driving / Highway / Fast
  • Speed badge also appears in the heading area
🏠

Mode 7 — Vastu Shastra View

8-zone Vedic directional guide · Room placement · Sanskrit names

Vastu Shastra (Sanskrit: वास्तु शास्त्र) is the ancient Indian science of spatial arrangement — the equivalent of feng shui in the Hindu tradition. This mode overlays all 8 directional zones on the compass dial with colour, Sanskrit names, and live zone highlighting.

  • 8 coloured sectors rotate with the dial — labels always point real-world directions
  • Active zone highlights with a bright outer arc as you turn
  • Heading badge: zone name + Sanskrit name (e.g. “Northeast · Ishan”)
  • Direction tab: lord, element, energy type, auspicious colour, and remedy
  • Room Guide tab: ideal rooms (green chips) and rooms to avoid (red chips)
  • 5-room quick reference: entrance, pooja room, kitchen, master bedroom, study
📍

Mode 8 — Waypoint Navigation

Drop a pin · Navigate back · Share coordinates

Save your current GPS position as a waypoint and navigate back to it from anywhere. The purple flag arrow on the dial always points toward your pin. Distance and bearing update live with every GPS fix.

  • Drop pin saves current GPS position — supports multiple waypoints (1, 2, 3…)
  • Live distance: metres or km, updating with every GPS fix
  • Bearing to waypoint: degrees + cardinal direction (updates as you move)
  • ETA calculated from current GPS speed; shows “—” when stationary
  • Course guidance: “On course” (green, ±5°) or “Turn left/right N°”
  • Open in Google Maps, share as text/WhatsApp link, copy coordinates

Complete Vastu Zone Reference

The Vastu mode includes the full Vastu Purush Mandala — all 8 directional zones with their ruling deities, Pancha Bhuta elements, colours, and ideal room placements. Use the app to find which direction you’re facing, then consult the panel for guidance.

How to Use the Compass Pro App

After installing, hold your phone flat and parallel to the ground with the screen facing up. The compass dial will spin to show your current heading. If readings seem off, calibrate by waving your phone in a figure-8 motion three times.

1Switch modes using the mode bar

Two rows of 4 tabs sit between your heading display and the compass dial. Tap any tab to switch instantly: Magnetic, True N, Qibla, Lock (row 1) and Sun, Speed, Vastu, Waypoint (row 2).

2Change theme or dial style

Tap the ≡ icon (top-left) to open the settings drawer. Tap any theme tile or style tile — the change applies immediately across every element of the app.

3Use Qibla mode for prayer

Tap the Qibla tab. Grant location permission if prompted. The green crescent arrow on the dial points toward Mecca. Slowly rotate your body until the panel shows “You are facing the Qibla” (within ±3°).

4Drop a Waypoint

Switch to Waypoint mode, tap “Drop Pin Here”. Your current location is saved. Walk anywhere — the purple arrow always points back. The distance and ETA update live. Tap Maps to open Google Maps at the pin, or Share to send coordinates to someone else.

5Calibrate if readings drift

Wave your phone slowly in a figure-8 pattern three times. This resets the magnetometer calibration. Avoid using the app near large metal objects, magnetic cases, or electrical machinery — all of which can distort readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — completely. The compass heading reads directly from your phone’s magnetometer sensor. True North, Qibla, Sun times, Speed tracking, and Vastu all work offline using your device’s GPS (which also needs no internet). The only feature that requires an internet connection is the “Open in Maps” button in Waypoint mode, which launches Google Maps in your browser.
Magnetic north points to the Earth’s magnetic north pole, currently located in northern Canada. True north (geographic north) points to the geographic North Pole — the axis around which the Earth rotates. The angle between them at your location is called magnetic declination. In Delhi it is about +0.5°, in Seattle about +15° east, in Sydney about +12° east. This app calculates it precisely for your GPS position using the WMM-2020 model and corrects your heading automatically in True North mode.
The Qibla bearing is calculated using the haversine formula on a spherical Earth model, accurate to within 0.01° from any point on Earth. The app confirms alignment when you are within ±3° of the correct bearing. For reference, most Islamic scholars accept a direction within 45° as sufficient for prayer — this app provides far greater precision. The Qibla calculation updates live as you move to a new city or country.
Vastu Shastra (वास्तु शास्त्र) is the ancient Indian system of architecture and spatial design — roughly equivalent to feng shui in Chinese tradition. It assigns specific energies, ruling deities, elements, and room purposes to the eight cardinal and intercardinal directions. To apply Vastu principles — such as placing your kitchen in the southeast (fire zone) or your pooja room in the northeast (sacred zone) — you first need to find these directions accurately. This app’s Vastu mode combines live compass readings with a full Vastu knowledge base so you can do this on your phone instantly, without needing a separate tool.
No. The app implements Android lifecycle awareness — it pauses all GPS and compass streams the moment you background it (switch to another app or lock your screen). When you return, streams restart. Battery consumption from this app while the screen is off is effectively zero. This is different from most compass apps, which keep GPS running in the background continuously.
The most common causes are: (1) Magnetic interference — metal phone cases, car mounts, speakers, and other electronics distort the magnetometer. Move away from metal objects. (2) Needs calibration — wave your phone in a slow figure-8 motion 3 times to reset. (3) Magnetic vs True North — if you’re using a map, switch to True North mode (the app corrects for magnetic declination automatically). (4) Flat orientation — hold your phone flat, not tilted.
Android 5.0 (Lollipop, API level 21) or higher. This covers virtually every Android device in active use today — Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nokia, and all other brands. The app targets Android 14 (API 34) for the best performance on modern phones.
The app requests three permissions: Location (foreground only) — to calculate True North, Qibla, Sun times, Speed, and Waypoint from your GPS position. The app never accesses your location in the background. Vibrate — for haptic feedback on actions like locking a bearing. Internet — only used when you tap “Open in Maps” in Waypoint mode, which opens Google Maps in your browser. The app does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.
Any Android phone with a magnetometer sensor running Android 5.0 or higher. Most modern phones have one — Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Redmi, OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nokia, Asus, Sony Xperia. A small number of budget phones (some Samsung Galaxy J1/J2/J3 models and low-cost Chinese handsets) lack a magnetometer and cannot use any compass app. If you’re unsure, install the app — it will tell you if the sensor is unavailable.
Yes. The app uses the full NOAA solar position algorithm — the same calculation used by meteorologists, astronomers, and professional lighting teams. It computes sunrise, sunset, and golden hour windows from your exact GPS coordinates and updates when you move. Accuracy is within one minute worldwide. The app also handles edge cases like polar regions where normal sunrise/sunset rules don’t apply.
Yes. In Waypoint mode, tap Share to send the waypoint name, decimal GPS coordinates, and a Google Maps link via any messaging app — WhatsApp, SMS, email, Telegram, etc. The recipient can tap the link to open the exact location in Google Maps. You can also tap Copy to copy the coordinates to your clipboard.
Yes, completely free. There is no premium tier, no subscription, and no feature lock. Every mode, theme, and dial style is available from the moment you install. The app is open source.
